BELFAST BAPS

- Logo Design

Introduction:

My first-ever freelance gig was for a new café in Belfast called Belfast Breakfast Baps. The owner wanted a fun, cartoon-style logo to be used on menus, signage, and merchandise as well as some branded materials like social media headers and posts.

Inspiration & Research:

I started by chatting with the client about his vision. He specifically asked for a cartoon bap supported by Belfast’s iconic Samson and Goliath cranes. Luckily, this matched the style I’d been experimenting with (as you might notice in my own logo).

After gathering reference images and looking at similar logos, I put together a mood board to ensure we were on the same page.

Design process:

Sketches & Concepts: The main challenge was figuring out the angle for the cranes so they looked dynamic without overshadowing the bap. Once I nailed the sketch, I quickly mocked up the layout to get a feel for composition.

Vector Work: I moved into Adobe Illustrator, building each element step by step. I decided to have one crane licking its lips and the other reaching for the bap, telling a playful mini-story.

Typography & Final Touches: I chose a fun, playful font that matched the vibe of the illustration. I also scheduled a quick photoshoot with a videographer friend to capture real baps for social media visuals, later editing them in Photoshop for a consistent look.

Final Design:

Once the client approved the main logo, I expanded it into a full logo pack with variations—wordmarks, stand-alone illustrations, and the complete circular badge.

I also provided a mini brand guide explaining usage, colors, and fonts. As well as a guideline for the order of the social posts I made for the client. (you can see these in the gallery section)
